- • Pain Bone pain should be treated with analgesics or narcotics . People
- with multiple myeloma have to be as active as possible because
- confinement to bed increases the bone loss. Patients should do all they
- can to avoid falling because a fall can result in multiple fractures. The use
- of an intramedullary rod in the long bones of the arm or leg should be
- considered when a large hole (lytic lesion) is seen on x-ray. The rod will
- stabilize the bone and prevent fractures. Radiation therapy to relieve
- pain may not be necessary for someone who is beginning chemotherapy .

- • Kidney Failure Increased fluid intake is necessary for patients with
- Bence Jones protein in the urine. They should drink enough fluids so that
- they produce approximately 3 quarts (3 L) of urine daily. Patients with
- acute kidney failure must be treated promptly with appropriate fluids
- and electrolytes . An artificial kidney (hemodialysis) may be necessary.
- In some cases, removing large amounts of plasma from the blood
- (plasmapheresis) may be helpful in acute kidney failure.
